I Hate Almost Everyone in this Book

I don't know if it was Jane Austen's intention (although I suspect that it was) but, as far as I can tell, none of the major characters other than Catherine presented thus far have any redeeming characteristics.

Isabella seemed to be okay at first, only to reveal herself as manipulative and shallow. I thought it was pretty funny when she was telling Catherine how highly she thinks of her friends, and that "If [she] were to hear anyone speak slightingly of [her], [she] should fire up in a moment" (33). Only a few lines later, however, her respect to her friends is called into question when she says "there is something amazingly insipid about her," referring to Miss Andrews (33). I don't think that someone who doesn't tolerate people speaking slightingly of her friends would call her friend insipid. Later, it becomes obvious that Isabella is willing to put boys before anyone else. At the ball she reveals that she is willing to completely abandon Catherine for her brother about five minutes after she says "I would not stand up without your dear sister for all the world" (43). Isabella's brother is even worse. He might be the most unjustifiably pompous character I have ever met in literature. His horse is just slow, and he needs to accept that. As for his gig, as far as I can tell it isn't that great, and he kind of got ripped off when he bought it. Later, at the ball, he doesn't treat Catherine very well. He disappears into the card room for most of the night and, soon after he comes back, leaves her all alone to make fun of his siblings.

So, I don't really know what point I'm trying to make here, but that's how I feel about the book so far. Don't get me wrong, I really like the book so far, I just can't stand the characters.

  1. I totally agree with you about the characters and their attitudes. I do not like Isabella and I think she will end up stabbing Catherine in the back or either talking Catherine into something since she is so naive. I absolutely hate Thorpe. I know everybody thinks he is funny but he is seriously crazy. He is so demanding and I can definitely relate to guys like this who are so clingy and they are nothing but trouble. However, Catherine I think will grow stronger as the book progresses unlike the other characters that I think will continue to get worse.
