My Main Mission

I was talking to Kelly about the overall plot of this novel, and I told her that I honestly could not find one. Thus far we are more than halfway done with the novel and I have yet to find the plot of the story, or the aspect of the novel that will help make us (the readers) feel that the story is complete. When it came to Wieland we knew that there was a mysterious voice/murderer that would be identified at the end of the story to make it a complete work of literature. But for Gould's Book of Fish I don't see that murderer or that mysterious voice, or even an event that needs to be solved. Thus far this novel has talked about the everyday lives of a prisoner in one of the most devastating prison systems of that time period. Though the details of the prison life were very captivating and somewhat interesting Flanagan has yet to give us a clear understand as to how this novel is going to be complete So what have I been doing thus far in hopes to make me keep reading through this book (aside from my grade being dependent on it)? I made up my own plot that will hopefully be supported by the next few readings. I believe that the main goal/objective of this novel is to find out who is talking to us. We have seen through various passages that the narration changes, sometimes very quickly, therefore the person telling the story is also changing; I believe that the author wants us to find out who is doing the talking, and who Gould really is (I dont think he is who we think he is). Nevertheless I might just end up being disappointed and this entire novel be a big joke that we had to read 400+ pages on, and Gould/Flanagan both point a giant finger and laugh at us at the end of this. Hopefully Kelly has not made us go through all of this just to make us become a part of this huge joke amongst the literary junkies, but reading this novel has shown that it could end in any sort of fashion.
