There were three basic topics that most of Group B’s comments addressed. The first pertains to the mysterious voice that occur throughout the readings. In the blogs, five names were mentioned: the deceased father, Carwin, a supernatural source (God), Catherine, and Pleyel.
The second popular topic commented on was “Clara’s fall from grace.” Several suggested that Clara was actually going through a process of self-realization through her experiences. Others suggested that she was merely reacting to circumstances and emotions she had never encountered before since she was quite sheltered and protected from the outside world as she grew up. Sarah suggested that the changes Clara seems to be undergoing was maybe as sign of Clara actually maturing. There was also several comments on what event started this “fall from grace.”
The third topic discussed in the comments concerned whether Clara was actually ever in love with Carwin. Though most people wrote that Clara was never in love with Carwin, Josh proposed that because the story is told in Clara’s perspective, Clara might be inclined to believe that she never liked Carwin in the first place.
Josh also posted a blog before our class this afternoon, entitling it “A Non-Satirical Critique.” He argues in his blog that “Charles Brockden Brown has inserted a religious critique into his work.”
